Fans of theatre and classic literature will have the chance to experience the acclaimed stage production of Frankenstein on the big screen, with National Theatre Live bringing the 2011 adaptation to selected Ster-Kinekor cinemas in South Africa.
Based on Mary Shelley’s classic novel, the production was written by Nick Dear and directed by Academy Award winner Danny Boyle.
It stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, who famously alternated between the roles of Victor Frankenstein and his Creature on different performance nights.
The production will screen on 31 October and 1 and 3 November 2026 at selected cinemas across South Africa and in Windhoek, Namibia.
The story follows Frankenstein’s Creature, who is abandoned by his creator and forced to navigate a hostile world. After facing cruelty and rejection, the increasingly desperate Creature sets out to find his maker and demands a terrifying deal.
Beyond its unsettling premise, the production explores scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil.
The stage adaptation features electronic music by Underworld, the duo made up of Rick Smith and Karl Hyde. The running time is two hours and 10 minutes.
National Theatre Live films stage productions for cinema audiences, allowing viewers to experience theatre performances beyond the venues where they were originally staged.
Lynne Wylie, who is the chief marketing officer of Ster-Kinekor Theatres, said the screenings give local audiences access to acclaimed British productions.
‘With NT Live productions showing on our cinema screens, local audiences get the opportunity to experience some of the best of British theatre in a theatre-like setting, as an extension of the live production’s audience. It is wonderful that we can show these world-class productions from the UK on our screens for audiences who enjoy and appreciate great theatre,’ said Wylie.
The production will be screened at selected Ster-Kinekor cinemas on 31 October, 1 November and 3 November 2026.
Venues include Rosebank Nouveau and Cresta in Johannesburg, Brooklyn in Pretoria, Watercrest in Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal, and the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. Screenings will also take place at Maerua Mall in Windhoek, Namibia.
Bookings are open, but screenings are limited to three shows. Loyalty offers apply to ticket prices, including half-price tickets on Tuesdays.
