Garden Day is returning to the Western Cape on Sunday, 18 October, with a programme that moves beyond traditional gardening and into food, flowers, workshops, open gardens and outdoor experiences.
Now in its 11th year, the annual celebration invites people to make time for gardens and green spaces, whether that means gathering around a table at home or heading out to one of the Cape’s participating destinations.
This year’s theme, From Garden to Table: Grow, Gather, Celebrate, places particular emphasis on the connection between what is grown and what eventually reaches the table.
From garden gatherings to Cape escapes
Garden Day is deliberately broad in its approach, as the official Garden Day programme encourages people to celebrate in whatever green space is available to them, from a private garden or balcony to a community garden, picnic spot or organised event.
For those looking to make a day of it, several Western Cape venues are preparing experiences that bring together gardening, food, art and the outdoors.
Among them is Babylonstoren, where the garden takes centre stage with a programme centred on edible produce, flower crowns, tastings, live music and activities across the farm.
The venue’s current listing places its Garden Day celebration on 18 October from 09:00 to 15:00, with standard garden entry at R190 per person.
A garden-to-table evening at Babylonstoren
For visitors looking to extend the day into dinner, Babylonstoren will also host a collaboration between executive chef Schalk Vlok and Horrell & Horrell.
The evening, scheduled for 17:30 to 22:00, will draw on seasonal ingredients and produce from the Babylonstoren garden and farm. The menu will be presented as a one-night collaboration, beginning with aperitifs and canapés before a sit-down progression of dishes.
Tickets are listed at R2 950 per person.
The collaboration forms part of a wider Garden Day weekend at Babylonstoren, which also includes a Vlok & Horrell fire supper on Friday, 16 October.
Flowers take centre stage in Stellenbosch
In Stellenbosch, the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden will open its grounds for Garden Day, giving visitors the option of exploring the garden independently or joining a guided tour.
A flower crown station will also form part of the experience, set among the Dombeya rotundifolia trees while they are in bloom.
The Garden Day listing places the event from 08:30 to 16:00, with admission at R280 for adults and R160 for pensioners and students. Prebooking is required.
Boschendal puts the food garden under the spotlight
At Boschendal, Garden Day will focus on the Werf Food Garden and the processes behind growing and maintaining a productive landscape.
The four-hour experience, running from 10:00 to 14:00, will take visitors through five hands-on and educational stations covering themes including waste, soil, seeds and growing.
Tickets are listed at R600 for adults and R50 for children under 12.
A slower morning in the Mother City
Garden Day also has a creative side, with events planned in Cape Town for those wanting something more hands-on.
At Backyard Cafe, a flower pressing workshop will combine a grounding meditation with seasonal flowers, refreshments and instruction on preserving blooms. Participants will also receive a Velt flower press to take home.
The workshop runs from 10:00 to 12:30 and costs R1 300 per person, with an optional fynbos flower crown available for an additional R160.
Meanwhile, Veld & Sea will host a spring flower workshop from 11:00 to 14:00, featuring a garden walk, edible flower education, botanical drinks, flower crown making and a spring-inspired grazing lunch. The experience is priced at R950 per person.

For those who would rather avoid an organised event, Garden Day does not require a formal itinerary.
A picnic beneath the trees, lunch with friends, an afternoon in a botanical garden or simply spending time tending to a few plants can all form part of the celebration.
In Cape Town and the surrounding Winelands, green spaces range from historic gardens and botanical collections to sculpture gardens, farms and landscaped cultural destinations, giving residents plenty of ways to mark the day without necessarily booking an event.

Chart Farm, Wynberg

The Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden provides another distinctly Cape setting, with its extensive plant collections and the Boomslang canopy walkway offering a different perspective of the gardens.
Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden
Situated in central Stellenbosch, the university botanical garden brings together a variety of plant collections and provides an accessible option for visitors already exploring the town.
