Painter’s pants, denim jackets and utility-inspired clothing have found a place in contemporary fashion, but for one Cape Town manufacturer, these styles have been part of its identity for generations.
Sweet-Orr, which has been producing workwear since 1871, is entering a new chapter with the launch of Sweet-Orr & Co., a fashion label introducing its first Spring/Summer 2026 collection.
The range brings together traditional workwear silhouettes and more contemporary styling, with colourful painter’s pants, denim pieces and designs inspired by the company’s historical clothing archive.
There is also a distinctly local element to the launch: the collection is being manufactured at Sweet-Orr’s family-owned factory in Elsies River, keeping production in Cape Town while introducing the heritage brand to a broader fashion audience.
From the factory floor to everyday fashion

The new collection takes its cues from garments traditionally associated with manual trades and industrial work, reworking familiar designs through different colours, washes and proportions.
Its Painter’s Pants, also known as Sweet-Orrs, are among the key pieces, retaining traditional detailing while adopting a more relaxed silhouette suited to everyday wear.
The colour palette moves beyond conventional workwear shades, with options including butter yellow, raspberry, periwinkle blue, marine green and chocolate brown.
Denim also features prominently, with lighter and darker washes appearing across the range. These include the Wappinger Trucker Jacket and bib-and-brace dungarees.
Other designs draw directly from the company’s archive, including the rust-coloured Uncle Jim Chore Jacket and an oversized butcher’s stripe Oil Jacket, finished with a vintage-inspired embroidered Sweet-Orr patch.
Accessories such as sling bags, bucket hats, beanies and peak caps complete the collection.
Sweet-Orr’s history stretches back to 1871, when James Orr and his nephews, Clayton and Clinton Sweet, began producing durable clothing for working people in Wappingers Falls, New York.
The company established its South African presence in 1931, initially responding to demand for protective clothing in the country’s expanding gold-mining industry, as highlighted by The New York Times.
Its manufacturing operations are now based in Elsies River, where the business continues to produce workwear and protective clothing.
The latest fashion venture builds on that history, taking garments originally designed for durability and functionality into a different retail space.
Sweet-Orr’s connection to the local fashion and retail scene is not entirely new. In 2022, the company collaborated with Cape Town retailer Jack Lemkus on a collection that brought together utility clothing and streetwear, introducing its archive-inspired designs to a wider consumer market.

Designed and made in Elsies River

While the collection draws on international fashion influences, its manufacturing remains firmly rooted in Cape Town.
Every piece is produced at Sweet-Orr’s family-owned Elsies River factory, where some employees have spent decades working in garment production.
Vanessa Govender, who is the Product and Manufacturing Executive at Sweet-Orr, said the new label is about building on the company’s existing designs rather than abandoning its established identity.
‘We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel. We’re taking the workwear we’ve made for generations and having some fun with it, whether that’s through colour, different washes or little details,’ she outlined.
Govender also shared her personal styling preference for the collection, pointing to the versatility of its signature trousers.
‘I love our Painter’s Pants. Give me the periwinkle blue pair, a crisp white shirt and some heels, and I’m ready to go out to dinner,’ she added.
She also highlighted the company’s approach to manufacturing, saying: ‘We make clothes to last, not just for a season, but for generations.’

For a company whose history spans more than 150 years, the new label represents an expansion into everyday fashion while retaining its longstanding manufacturing base in Cape Town.
Rather than moving away from the garments that established its reputation, Sweet-Orr is taking familiar workwear designs into a new setting, with its first collection introducing colour, denim and archive-inspired pieces to a wider audience.
