In the build-up to the annual Festive Lights Switch-On on 26 November, the City of Cape Town launched a dance competition in hopes of finding the City’s top three crews.
A total of 46 entries were received for the competition. Now, 10 will join the Dance Battle for top honours at the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre this coming Sunday.
Dance professionals Blake Williams and Nkosinathi Sangweni will decide who gets to perform on the main stage at the Festive Lights Switch On.

‘This is a really exciting pre-event showdown, and I want to thank the dance crews who took the time to submit their entries. To those who will have the opportunity to be part of the dance battle, we look forward to seeing what you bring to the stage,’ says Alderman JP Smith, the City’s Mayco member for safety and security.
‘The City also invites the public to join the event at the Waterfront and cheer on these crews. Dance is one of the most popular forms of expression in our country and our city, and I’ve no doubt that it’ll be a full house for this showdown. And while, the crews are competing for the spotlight, and cash prizes, there may even be some prizes for the public too.’
The crews who will showcase their dance moves are, in no particular order:
- Blaqshandis Dance Crew – from Nyanga
- 021_rebels – from Bonteheuwel
- Street_Kings based in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain
