A 51-year-old male has been arrested in connection with the large blaze that damaged the Houses of Parliament in Cape Town on Sunday, January 2.
According to SABC News, President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed that the suspect was taken in for questioning and the Parliamentary precinct has been examined where parts of the National Key Point was still on fire.
“The person is now officially a suspect and will appear in court on Tuesday,” Hawks spokesperson Brig Nomthandazo Mbambo told TimesLIVE.
The Hawks have now taken the investigation of the fire into their own hands and have also confirmed that the suspect was not a parliament employee and simply gained access to the precinct through a back window.
