There’s no denying that Cape Town’s Cape Point is one of the most breathtaking destinations on the planet. But what happens when you combine this natural wonder with the power, comfort and luxury of the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53, all while tackling the most challenging wet weather conditions?

It’s what happened to me a fortnight ago and I got an unforgettable driving experience that’s simply unmatched, writes Oliver Keohane from Leisure Wheels.
The Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 is not your average SUV. This powerful machine comes with a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine, enhanced by a 48-volt mild hybrid system, producing a combined output of 336 kW and 520 N.m of torque. Yet, despite its raw power, the GLE 53 is incredibly smooth and comfortable on the road.

As we set out from Cape Town’s Devil’s Peak towards Cape Point, the skies opened up and the rain came pouring down.
With a 20-month-old daughter buckled in but refusing to sleep, I knew it wasn’t going to be the easiest of drives, but rather than being a cause for concern, this turned out to be the perfect opportunity to put the GLE 53’s capabilities to the test.
With its adaptive air suspension and AMG-tuned 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, the SUV effortlessly navigated wet and slippery roads. Its innovative safety features, including active brake assist, lane-keeping assist and blind-spot assist, provided an additional level of confidence in these challenging conditions.

The GLE 53 also boasts a spacious and luxurious cabin, making the journey to Cape Point all the more enjoyable. The MBUX infotainment system, complete with a 12.3-inch touchscreen display, provided real-time weather updates and navigation, ensuring we stayed on course.

The plush leather seats, heated and ventilated for optimal comfort, ensured we arrived at our destination feeling relaxed and refreshed.

I’ve been to Cape Point often, but that first glimpse never becomes boring, and as we rounded the final bend and caught sight of our Saturday afternoon lunch destination, I was reminded of how much we, as locals, take for granted when it comes to our home city.
Perched on the southwestern tip of the African continent, Cape Point offers some of the most dramatic coastal views you’ll ever see. The raw beauty of the ocean crashing against the rugged cliffs is a sight to behold, and the area’s rich biodiversity adds to its allure.
The journey to Cape Point is not just about the destination, though. Along the way, you’ll pass through the picturesque coastal towns of Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town, each offering its own unique charm and appeal. Locals know this; international visitors may not.
You can also stop at Boulders Beach to marvel at the African penguin colony or take a detour through the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve to explore its abundant flora and fauna. On this particular wet Saturday midmorning drive, Boulders was not an option, even though the penguins are among my daughter’s favourites.
Once you arrive at Cape Point, be sure to take the Flying Dutchman Funicular to the old lighthouse, weather dependent, of course, where you’ll be awed by the 360-degree views of the rugged coastline.
And if you’re feeling peckish, there is a cafe, but if you want a lunchtime treat, then opt for the Two Oceans Restaurant. We booked in advance, and I’d suggest the same if lunch is primarily the reason for your outing.
The panoramic ocean vistas are stunning, and while the pork belly is a winner with my family, I was never looking beyond the linefish and prawns.
Our trip home, to the city centre, took 90 minutes and instead of going via Fish Hoek and the ongoing main road that takes you past Simon’s Town, we opted for the Chapman’s Peak route, which has an ocean beauty all of its own.

Admittedly, this was a trip made to seem effortless with the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53. It truly shines in the most difficult wet weather conditions, showcasing its exceptional performance and advanced safety features.
But it’s not just about the drive – the luxurious interior, coupled with the SUV’s impressive capabilities, makes the journey to Cape Point an absolute pleasure.

Cape Point itself is a destination like no other, offering breathtaking views, an incredible array of wildlife and a unique blend of history and natural beauty. Whether you’re a tourist or a local, it’s a must-see attraction that should be on everyone’s Cape Town bucket list.
So, next time you find yourself in the Mother City and the weather isn’t playing ball, don’t be disheartened. Take a drive, even though I know I was fortunate to do it in the GLE 53.
