Police in the Western Cape arrested a 69-year-old man in Pearly Beach, Gansbaai, for illegally possessing abalone.

This comes after six bags of abalone were seized during a Saturday bust in response to a tip about a suspicious vehicle heading towards the Robertson area.
The abalone stock was discovered to have a market value of R350 000.
‘The members quickly respond to the information. The vehicle was spotted in Voortrekker Road and when the suspect saw the police vehicle he tried to flee. The vehicle was stopped and searched at the Shell garage in Robertson and a total of 1,247 units of abalone were found in the vehicle and confiscated,’ said Western Cape police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk.
The suspect is expected to appear at the Robertson Magistrates’ Court today.
In an unrelated matter on Saturday, members attached to the Economic Infrastructure Task Team were conducting compliance duties when they visited a shop in Paarl, Brickfields number 1.

Upon visiting, a search was conducted and the members confiscated five pieces of copper (Spoornet cables) with an estimated weight of approximately 8.2kg. A 40-year-old male was arrested for possession of stolen property. The suspect will appear in the Paarl Magistrates’ Court today.
Meanwhile, on Friday, members of the Cape Town Central Crime Prevention Unit conducted patrols along FW de Klerk Boulevard in Cape Town. They neared the shacks alongside the boulevard and observed a male sitting outside one of the shacks.
Upon seeing the marked SAPS vehicle, the male sprang up and threw a packet into the shack. The members stopped the vehicle and approached the male, introduced themselves and requested to know what he threw into the shack. The male refused to respond and they proceeded to enter the shack and found a transparent plastic packet containing 68 suspected mandrax tablets and tik at the entrance to the shack.
A 35-year-old male was arrested for dealing in drugs and will appear in Cape Town Magistrates’ Court today.
