An investigation has been launched into allegations of racism at a Cape Town high school after reports surfaced that a black student was allegedly made to bow down to a white pupil.
This comes after an alleged fight over a bench during break time at Milnerton High School. According to reports, the white pupil brought the matter to a teacher’s attention once the altercation ended, while the black pupil was allegedly instructed by the head of the disciplinary committee to go down on his knees and bow to the white student.
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is aware of the alleged incident, and an investigation is underway in order to find out exactly what took place.
“The matter was reported to Labour Relations and an investigation is underway. The school has dealt with the matter according to WCED policy and protocols. The learners have not been suspended. There have been a number of discussions between the parties, and apologies have been made,” said WCED’s Bronagh Hammond.
The alleged incident has also sparked outrage in communities as Amnesty International took to Twitter to called for intervention.
We are shocked to hear about a disturbing report between learners and teachers at Milnerton High School where the head of the school’s disciplinary committee allegedly made the black pupil get on his knees and bow to the white pupil after an argument over a bench.
