Jermaine Carelse, the spokesperson for the City’s fire service, says initial reports indicate that two vehicles were involved in a collision, after which one ended up in the lagoon near the concrete bridge. ‘The driver of the vehicle sustained injuries and was treated on the scene by Metro EMS personnel. The scene was handed over to the South African Police Service at 01:30 with the vehicle still in the lagoon.’
The Tygerburger reports that Charmaine Warburton witnessed the incident via her bedroom window. ‘Fortunately, the driver (Jamie) is a fit young man who managed to get himself out of the car and swam about 20 metres to get to safety.’
Warburton resides opposite Marine Drive and the lagoon. She adds that the area is notorious for street racing. ‘After midnight, cars race down Marine Drive, and nothing is being done. There are no speeding cameras on this road. I have notified the councillor and the City countless times, but my complaints just fall on deaf ears.’
