An alleged racial attack at a KFC in the Cape Winelands is under investigation, but apparently not by the police, according to Hector Yabo. The ANC’s chief whip for the district,Yabo, stands at the forefront of the incident’s condemnation, as well as the middleman between the victims and the public.
According to Yabo, the incident took place on July 3 where four white men in separate bakkies reportedly broke the window of a car that belonged to a black man at the KFC drive-through in Worcester. Yabo added that one of the men stabbed the victim.
As IOL reports, the victim identified as Xola Letaba (40) claims he was not the only one assaulted. Other people in the fast-food joint’s perimeters as well as Letaba’s female friend all reportedly faced racial slurs and physical assault, and were even “chased around with an axe”.
Letaba says that numerous members of the community have shared similar instances, and this is what led him to reach out to the ANC. Reaching out to Yabo also followed the reported ply aloof handling of the case by the SAPS. Yabo revealed that the SAPS “could not reveal whether or not arrests in the case had been made,” as per multiple reports.
Of capturing the incident, Yabo added that the KFC in question claimed that their CCTV cameras were not working. However, the ANC authority took to share footage of some of the incident’s happenings to his Facebook page, along with other posts captioned with “RACISM MUST FALL”.
The police have since been pressurised to investigate the situation.
