‘On Friday, 24 November at 6:38pm, information was received of an attempted robbery close to Signal Hill,’ reported Alderman Smith. ‘A description of the perpetrators was circulated, and in a joint response, the area was saturated and a search was initiated.’
‘Within minutes, the suspects were located, now having changed their appearance. Both suspects were minors, but having located their clothing that was worn during the attempted robbery and found hidden close by, both suspects were detained by SAPS.’
The SAPS aims to investigate any connections these minors may have to similar recent crimes in the area.
Simultaneously, the SANParks SEAM Team dealt with another incident on the Rhodes Memorial side of TMNP. A suspect matching the description of a previous mugging was questioned but not detained due to a lack of a registered criminal case.
Smith noted that the public plays a vital role in these situations. Immediate reporting to the City’s emergency call centre at 021 480 7700 is essential for a swift response.
He said that reporting incidents on chat groups, although helpful, should be secondary to contacting authorities.
Even unsuccessful criminal attempts should be reported to SAPS, as this helps in future case linkages. Sharing police CAS numbers in chat groups can also assist in streamlining responses to similar incidents.
