The facility was in ruins by the end of 2016 due to a devastating fire that an electrical fault caused, which also destroyed all amenities and machinery.
However, the City’s Recreation and Parks Department has since rebuilt the facility, with services being restored.
The Bellville Netball Club is now set to receive further upgrades, including the improvement of floodlights and the resurfacing of four out of the eight netball courts, with two of them being converted into fast-five netball courts.
Additionally, major improvements are planned for the surrounding area to create a central space that accommodates all sporting codes for the benefit of patrons.
JP Smith, the City’s mayoral committee member for safety and security, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming World Cup, stating, ‘The excitement for the World Cup is certainly building as Cape Town gears up to create history for the netball community.’
Smith said that as part of the build-up activities for the Vitality Netball World Cup, the City’s Events Department has adorned the main building of the facility with the latest legacy mural.

Similar murals have been previously unveiled in various locations, including Langa, Khayelitsha, Strand, Bellville South, Atlantis, Mitchells Plain, Kuils River, Makhaza and Lotus River.
The Bellville Netball Club not only serves as a venue but also acts as the headquarters of the Cape Town Netball Federation (CTNF) and hosts numerous league matches that pave the way for the future success of young players.
It has been the training ground for many renowned netball players, including Irene Van Dyk, a South African-born player who holds the record for the most international caps.
