Baby Orderick Lucas was discovered in a drain in Wittebol Street, Melton Rose, Eerste River on Tuesday, just metres away from his grandmother’s home. Orderick went missing on Sunday, March 24, but his mother only reported him missing at the Kleinvlei police station on Thursday, March 28.

He was last seen alive by his mother’s friend, who was with him from Saturday to Sunday.

“[The friend of the mother claimed] that the mother took the child on Sunday night. Mother is saying that she not sure whom she [gave] the child to,” a missing persons flyer from the Pink Ladies read.

Speaking to the Cape Times, Orderick’s grandmother Cornelia Scheepers said that she had hoped that he would be found alive. “I stayed positive,” she said.

Orderick’s body was discovered when a ball that children in the street were playing with slipped into the drain. Only when a parent came to assist the children with getting the ball out of the drain was the little boy discovered.

A case of murder is currently being investigated.
