A Bolt driver was robbed by four matric pupils with knives from a school in Cape Town last week, reports IOL.
The knife-wielding teens left the driver traumatised after he was reportedly beaten and robbed of his valuables, including his cellphone. The suspects have been released on bail at the Khayelitsha Magistrate‘s Court on Monday, but the 50-year-old man says he is scared for his life.
“The incident happened on Thursday afternoon when I got a request for a trip from the Cape Town CBD to Khayelitsha,” he explains.
The driver says that he was a bit sceptical of the trip as it was going to Khayelitsha, but relaxed after realising they were students.
“During the trip, they told me they are writing exams and need to go to a friend’s house to study.”
Once they reached Khayelitsha, the students instructed the Bolt driver, who was busy on his cellphone before he was attached by the foursome.
“One of them got out and shouted that I must give my phone and that is when the knives came out and they tried to stab me,” he explained.
The students then beat him and took off with his wallet, cellphone and keys before they threw the latter into the sand. The traumatised driver made his way to the Khayelitsha police station and reported the incident, however, he also made his way to the school the following day.
“I told the principal what happened and he told me to come back at 10am as they were writing exams. I came back with the police and the principal made all the children take off their masks and I identified two of them.
“Those two told the police who their friends were and during a search, they found knives again on them.
“They even found my phone that they sold to one of their classmates,” he stated.
The incident was confirmed by SAPS’ Wesley Twigg, who indicated the four suspects, aged 18, were arrested and charged with robbery but released on bail.
Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond, states the four pupils will complete their exams and stand before a School Governing Body to determine the next steps in terms of disciplinary action against the students.
