A fire that broke out at 8.16am this morning [March 19] claimed the life of a Steenberg boy.

According to the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse, the Lakeside fire crew were the first to respond to the blaze in Steenberg.

“Lakeside’s fire crew was first on scene in Symphony Avenue where several formal and informal structures were on fire and one person was reported to be missing,” he said. “Firefighting and search and rescue operations were conducted simultaneously and the body of a boy was recovered.”

Three homes were destroyed by the fire and two informal structures were left partially damaged.

“The fire was extinguished at 9.35am and the scene was handed over to the South African Police police Service’s Forensics unit, ” Carelse added.

There is no information available as to what caused the fire yet or the age of the boy.
