According to a circular sent to parents by the school’s principal, Louis Mostert, the incident occurred off-campus at the intersection of Kloof and Victoria roads on Wednesday, 22 February 2023, where the three students sustained injuries.
Mostert confirmed that the injured pupils received medical attention and added that the perpetrators were not affiliated with the school. He appealed for calm while the matter was being investigated.
Mostert added, “We are taking this incident extremely seriously as the safety of our learners is our main priority. While it is disturbing that something like this could happen in the vicinity of our school, we have strict protocols in place to ensure learners are protected from outsiders while on campus.”
According to police spokesperson Wesley Twigg, the Camps Bay police have registered an assault case for investigation. Twigg also stated that no arrests have been made yet and that the investigation is still ongoing.
IOL reported that a concerned parent, speaking anonymously said: “To say I am shocked would be an understatement. I am still in disbelief and scared for the safety of our kids.”
The parent has also expressed her confidence that the school would handle the matter appropriately.
Unconfirmed reports suggest the incident occurred due to an argument between two groups of students during a break on Tuesday.
According to Bronagh Hammond, a spokesperson for the Western Cape Education Department, three students were approached and attacked by unknown males, whose ages are currently unknown.
Hammond stated that two students sustained injuries from a knife, while the third suffered a head wound. All three students are currently recuperating at home.
“It is not yet known what the motive for the attack was. It is also not clear if the attackers were learners. We do know that they were not learners from CBHS,” Hammond added.
