The incident took place on 4 march 2023, and Lotz was buried in Strand on Saturday, 25 March 2023.
On the day of the encounter, Appolis went to fetch his partner from work, and Lotz’s friend was the driver.
The family spokesperson, Sylvia Scheepers, told News24, ‘All we know is that he told their kids he would fetch Nadia at work and bring her home. The car driver was Nadia’s friend, who was not doing well at all. The little information I was told is that the friend witnessed everything and that after the incident, he forced her to drive him to the police; otherwise, he would also kill her.’
Women for Change added that ‘her boyfriend was sitting behind Lotz when he leaned forward and allegedly slit her throat’.
The couple had three children together, ages one, seven and eight; however, Appolis had been abusive towards Lotz for years.
‘He wasn’t a nice man; he abused her so badly that her work colleagues would have to put make-up on her to cover the marks he left on her face,’ said Scheepers.
Captain FC van Wyk, the Western Cape’s SAPS spokesperson, has confirmed the accused slit her throat and stabbed her in the neck.
Appolis is currently in custody and has chosen not to apply for bail. ‘He abandoned his bail application; the case was again postponed to 14 April for further investigation. He remains in custody,’ said Van Wyk.
