Cape Town commuters can breathe a little easier ahead of the new working week, with the minibus taxi industry confirming that services will be available for Monday morning’s rush, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The reassurance follows discussions between the City of Cape Town and leadership from the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) on Sunday, 1 November.
Councillor Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, said the engagement had provided confidence that commuters would be able to rely on minibus taxis for their journeys on Monday.
The confirmation will be welcome news for thousands of residents who depend on taxis to get to work, school and other daily commitments.
The City has also indicated that other public transport services will continue operating. Meanwhile, the South African Police Service (SAPS), alongside City and provincial safety teams, will maintain a visible presence across various transport routes, taxi ranks and stations.
Surveillance and safety operations are expected to continue into the week as authorities monitor the situation.
For commuters, the immediate message is that minibus taxi services are expected to be available on Monday morning, with other public transport options also operating.
