Victims of rape are often discouraged from reporting these incidents as the institutions placed in our society to serve and protect often fail them. Or, in some cases, they are simply too afraid to report these crimes for fear of retaliation from their perpetrator.
It takes a lot of courage for a victim to come forward and name their accuser. This felt like the case when a 43-year-old woman opened a case of rape against her boyfriend at a Milnerton police station on 12 March.
However, according to the South African Police Service, not everything is as it seems as it was soon revealed that the woman had lied.
On 4 April, the woman was arrested and detained in Atlantis as she confessed that she had lied about the incident, withdrawing the case.
Unfortunately, the damage has already been done and victims of sexual assault crimes were done a disservice.
