President Cyril Ramaphosa recently signed the Employment Equity Amendment Bill of 2020 into law, which amends the Employment Equity Act of 1998 with new measures to promote diversity and equality in the workplace.
However, the new amendments received heavy backlash as the DA claims that 600 000 people stand to lose their jobs as a result of it.

According to the Mail and Guardian, the opposition party has taken legal action to have parts of the new law scrapped, arguing that it violates South Africa’s constitutional principle of non-racialism.
The new law requires that companies, that have more than 50 employees, submit equity plans to reflect the demography of the region they operate in and to set out how they intend to achieve them. The minister of labour now has the power to set numerical targets for certain economic sectors.
