The Chrysalis Academy in Cape Town received a total of 4 178 applications for the January 2024 intake. The academy is a development organisation run by the Department of Community Safety that offers a three-month holistic leadership development programme for young people across the Western Cape.

Western Cape minister of police oversight and community safety, Reagen Allen, says the applications come from young men aged between 18 and 25, to become part of the 23 CHARLIE male course. Applications opened on 1 June 2023 and closed on 31 July 2023.
To date, 655 applications have been captured, 523 are being captured and 3 000 emails still need to be processed.

In addition, successful female candidates for the 23 BRAVO course are currently being informed. This course will start on 2 September 2023.
Since its inception in 2 000, the Chrysalis Academy has seen more than 10 000 graduates. The course comprises several phases and trainings, including first aid, basic cookery, security training, peace officer, welding, office administration and electrical circuitry.
Upon completion, graduates are offered a 12-month employment opportunity via the Expanded Public Works Programme and placed in various entities such as Western Cape Government departments, municipalities and the South African Police Service.
