“She left for work only to meet her death behind her desk.” These were the words of a grieving relative of the news that a loved one, who also happened to be a senior Cape Town City staff member, had been murdered, as per IOL. However, whether the bullet was planned for the victim, a mother of three, and not another party, is a considerable stake in the case.
Dr Zahid Badroodien confirmed the news on Twitter, expressing that:
“It is with immense shock that I inform our greater Cape Town community of the fatal shooting that has taken place at our Scientific Services Branch based in Athlone. The police are on scene and are conducting a full investigation.”

The victim, who was shot on Monday, is said to be a 49-year-old woman who was shot and fatally wounded, according to Police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk. Another woman (39) was also shot in the shoulder and injured.
Two other people were also said to be at the scene but remained uninjured according to the police.
People began to question whether it was an assassination on social media. According to IOL’s report, the grieving relative expressed that they “had heard that the assailant had been looking to hurt his partner when he barged into the premises and opened fire,” however the notion that this was a ‘mistaken hit’ case is still speculation at this point.
