Cocaine with an estimated street value in excess of R1 million was seized at Cape Town International Airport on Tuesday.
This comes after members of the SAPS’ Provincial Organised Crime Narcotics unit followed up on information regarding a 37-year-old passenger who was allegedly smuggling the drug on a flight from Dubai.
According to SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, members of the unit were strategically placed to profile and search passengers disembarking from the International flight just before midday.
“Amidst the hustle and bustle, members kept close observation and conducted intense searches,” said Swartbooi. “Their mandate was fulfilled when they confiscated 4 kg of cocaine wrapped in chocolate wrappings hidden in the luggage of one of the passengers.”
“A 37-year-old man was arrested and detained on a charge of dealing in drugs.”
The suspect is due to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on charges related to drug trafficking
