The City of Cape Town has praised the firefighters who managed to contain a blaze above Simon’s Town in the early hours of this morning.
While crews remained on the scene throughout the night in case the inferno flared up again, the fire from the waterfall ravine to Jan Smuts Drive mostly burnt itself out.
On top of the mountain at SANAD and Signal School, city fire crews supported by more than 10 fire engines, SANParks and NCC, had their work cut out for them as strong winds raised some concerns, fanning the flames above Millers Point and Seaforth. The situation was monitored throughout the night in order to assess the risk to residents in Murdock Valley, Froggy Farm and Seaforth.
The fire also came close to residences on Barnard Street in the early evening and then to houses on Horatio Way after midnight. However, city fire crews were on site and there was no damage to property.
Meanwhile, Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, was full of praise for the firefighters for their bravery.
‘These firefighters have been on the line since 9am this morning (Tuesday), dragging hoses as they picked their way across steep rock slopes,’ he posted on Facebook, along with a series of photographs of the heroes at work. ‘A single hose, once filled with water, easily weighs 100kg.’
