Reynold Talmakkies, the head of the City of Cape Town’s Special Investigating Unit, has been suspended due to inappropriate behaviour linked to a murder case in which his son is an accused.

Last week, the Western Cape Division of the High Court determined that Talmakkies ‘acted inappropriately’ when he reportedly approached the magistrate overseeing the case between proceedings. The incident prompted her to recuse herself.
As per the Daily Maverick, the magistrate did so because she felt that the incident could be viewed as an attempt to influence her. However, the high court set aside her recusal, stating that she did no wrong and that Talmakkies’ actions equated to a security breach.

At the time of the High Court’s finding, the City told the Daily Maverick that it was ‘considering its options’ regarding Talmakkies’ fate.
On Friday, it was confirmed that Talmakkies was suspended. ‘The City can confirm that Mr Talmakkies has been suspended. Due process will now be followed, in line with the City’s policies and procedures, and it would be premature to speculate on the outcome of these processes.’
It is not the first time that the former South African Police Service officer has faced legal challenges. In 2021, Talmakkies faced accusations of fraud in a case related to alleged docket manipulation. He was also arrested in December 2021 on charges related to tender fraud.
