Is there anything more powerful than a determined woman? The month of August has been an unadulterated celebration of women, and one woman from Eerste River is proving just why women deserve to be celebrated daily.
Andiswa Siwela grabbed her climbing boots and decided to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to help raise funds to rebuild toilets for her former school, reports IOL.
Siwela states that she has always enjoyed being in nature and hiking. While climbing Devil’s Peak in 2019, inspiration struck with the idea to climb Mount Kilimanjaro slowly forming in her mind.
“When the idea came to me I thought I should not climb Kilimanjaro for nothing but try to give back while doing it,” Siwela said.
Unfortunately, her plans to climb the mammoth mountain had to be put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the funds that she had diligently raised were not enough.
But the time has finally come to put one foot in front of the other as Siwela makes the big climb next week in the hopes of helping her school and achieving her goal.
If you thought that Siwela’s generosity stopped there, you would be mistaken. Each year on her birthday, which she will celebrate next month, she gives back to different people and organisations in need. Her passion and drive are only amplified by the challenges that she sees many children in poorer areas experience.
“Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a huge challenge, but nothing is as challenging as what these children have to face every day trying to learn and better themselves,” she said.
Siwela is aiming to raise a total of R150 000, and if you would love to help out her cause, visit https://www.backabuddy.co.za/qakazana-middle-school.
