This is according to Scopa chairperson, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, who said they received a letter from ANC MP Bheki Hadebe on 1 March requesting the committee urgently invite De Ruyter to provide more information regarding the allegations he made in the eNCA interview that aired on 23 February.
Speaking to eNCA’s Annika Larsen, shortly after his resignation, the former CEO said that there was widespread wrongdoing at the power utility involving high ranking politicians.
No names were provided, but De Ruyter insinuated that the ruling party and ministers were aware of the corruption and fraud but had failed to address the problem.
He added that Eskom was a feeding trough for the ruling party and that the ANC was stuck in embarrassingly outdated communist ideologies.
‘After tabling Mr Hadebe’s letter, Scopa resolved to invite Mr De Ruyter to engage with the committee on the allegations he raised regarding corruption, theft, maladministration, sabotage, lack of consequence management, cartels and other financial irregularities at Eskom.’
‘Subsequent to that invitation, sent on 17 March 2023, the committee has received a response from Mr De Ruyter through his legal representatives acceding to the committee’s request,’ Hlengwa said.
In this response, De Ruyter indicated that he would present a written submission to the committee on the issues he has raised, and is agreeable to appearing before it at a date to be determined by the committee.
‘The committee believes that it is important for it to engage with Mr De Ruyter on these issues in line with its constitutional mandate of holding Eskom accountable on matters related to the financial administration of the power utility, including the procurement of goods and services.’
