A video circulating on social media appears to show shopkeepers scrambling for cover as gunfire erupts inside a shop in Dunoon, Cape Town, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The footage was posted on X by @LudidiVelani, who captioned it: ‘WATCH: Shopkeepers hide under the counter as extortionists fire shots at them in Dunoon, Cape Town.’ The post does not give a date, identify the people involved or state whether anyone was injured.

The footage comes as small businesses across the Western Cape continue to face alleged protection rackets. According to a TimesLive report published on 27 September, Western Cape police commissioner Lt-Gen Sizakhele Dyantyi said 109 extortion cases were reported in the province between April and June 2026.
Of those, 52 involved protection-racket extortion. Spaza and tuck shops were the most frequently targeted premises, accounting for 13 reported cases.
Dunoon has also been linked to an alleged extortion-related killing this year. Community activist and DA councillor candidate Sinovuyo Dyokwe was shot dead in the area in June. Police later said preliminary investigations indicated she had allegedly been subjected to extortion and forced to pay protection money. Police subsequently arrested a suspect in connection with her murder and extortion charges.
For now, the latest footage remains a social media account of an incident that still requires official confirmation, with the circumstances surrounding the gunfire yet to be established.
