Beloved South African actress Christine Basson passed away in her home on the morning of Monday, June 10, mere hours after her 78th birthday.

Basson was best known for her role as Nora Naudé on the wildly popular M-Net soapie Egoli. She was a resident at the Ekklesia Park retirement village at the time of her death, and celebrated her 78th birthday on Sunday, 9 June.

According to Netwerk24, Basson passed away at 4.45am on Monday morning.

“Our beloved friend Christine Basson – for many the strong motherly figure Nora Naudé from Egoli – peacefully went home this morning. She will be missed,” a friend of Basson, Reinet Louw Kemp, said in a post on Facebook.

“Legendary actress Christine Basson has died. She was a true legend and icon. I learnt a lot from her as a mentor when I was a young actress,” actress Lizz Meiring tweeted.

According to a friend of Basson’s, the actress was in poor health in the months leading up to her death, having fractured her coccyx and being in a lot of pain due to osteoporosis.
