According to SAPS spokesperson Mda Rhode, security guards notified police of a man they had found covered in blood from a head wound along Contermanskloof Road on Saturday.
‘It was later discovered that the man was assaulted and robbed of his belongings inside his house at Kliprug Farm,’ Rhode confirmed. ‘According to information, he was attacked with an unknown object by two unknown suspects inside his house.’
Rhode said police had found a bloody axe and knives in the ransacked house.
‘At this stage, it is unknown how entry was gained by the suspects.’
‘The suspects fled in the direction of Dunoon. At this stage no suspects have been identified or arrested. A house robbery case will be investigated by the Durbanville Police,’ he said.
Meanwhile, anti-crime activist Hanif Loonat called for swift arrests.
‘We can not allow the continuous crimes to be perpetrated on vulnerable people of communities,’ he told IOL. ‘While I understand that police can not police every individual, they can ensure the arrest of these criminals and that a justifiable sentence to fit the crime is imposed on them. We have for too long neglected these crimes against the vulnerable, children, women, disabled and the aged.’
The incident comes a few days after two men accused of murdering an elderly hiker in the Western Cape were given hefty prison sentences by the Circuit High Court in Swellendam.
The accused, 20-year-old John Lee Bron and his 26-year-old accomplice, Jacobus Simon Skondo, were arrested shortly after the body of Erna Gericke (66) was found along a hiking trail on 21 March 2021.
