A 40-year-old Fidelity crewman has been arrested in connection with a staged cash-in-transit robbery that took place in Airport Industria in 2025. The Hawks believe the man is linked to the incident on Borchards Quarry Road, Cape {town} Etc reports.
According to Smile 90.4FM, the crewman was arrested on suspicion of involvement in a robbery that was allegedly set up rather than a genuine attack. It happened in the industrial area close to Cape Town International Airport.
Hawks spokesperson Captain Zinzi Hani said a white Nissan hardbody bakkie stopped in front of the armoured vehicle and blocked it. The armoured vehicle hit the back of the bakkie. When the driver tried to reverse, a white Toyota Fortuner blocked the way from behind.
A third vehicle, a VW Polo, then approached and fired multiple shots at the armoured vehicle. The guards got out and ran for cover in the surrounding bushes.
According to Hani, the driver was tackled and searched, and a cell phone and R200 were taken from his pocket. An unknown number of suspects surrounded the vehicle and placed explosives on it.
A Flying Squad vehicle on its way to a shooting in Elsies River reportedly came across the robbery in progress. The suspects abandoned it and fled in the Fortuner and the bakkie. The Polo was set alight and burnt out, and an undisclosed amount of money was taken.
Hani said investigations showed the robbery appeared to have been staged, with two Fidelity guards believed to be involved. After the investigation, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) decided that the driver and the crewman ‘must be arrested and charged’. A warrant of arrest was obtained on 30 October 2026.
The crewman was arrested on Thursday 5 November. Hani said the search continues for the second person. He was expected to make his first appearance in the Bishop Lavis Magistrates’ Court on Friday 6 November 2026. The allegations have not been tested in court.
In July 2025, KwaZulu-Natal security guards Phakamani Myaka (37) and Muzikayifani Khoza (40) were sentenced to 15 years in prison for fraud after staging a cash-in-transit robbery in Ndwedwe in October 2021, according to TimesLIVE. The Hawks said preliminary investigations showed the robbery was staged and that all the guards on the crew were involved.
As described by the Hawks, the attack had the usual markers of a cash-in-transit hit: blocked vehicles, gunfire, explosives and a burnt-out getaway car. That is what makes staged cases hard to spot. A violent scene does not always mean a real attack and it can take investigators a long time to tell the difference.
