The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services have been trying to ascertain the cause of a strong smell of gas that has been concerning residents since last night, 17 July.

‘We received numerous reports of a strong smell of gas in areas such as Bonteheuwel, Manenberg, Mitchell’s Plain and Sea Point, to name but a few,’ says Jermaine Carelse, Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson.

However, Carelse says the teams sent out to investigate could not locate the source of the smell. ‘Our call centre phoned several entities: Afrox, Astron, the Airport, the Harbour and the Air Pollution department; however, no one reported any gas leaks.’
While the Fire Service is not able to pinpoint the source of the smell, the situation is being monitored.
Residents are encouraged to contact the Public Emergency Communication Centre at 021 480 7700 with any information that could shed light on the matter.
