Fire crews said that they had made good progress overnight and that they had been able to contain at least 80% of the fire line.
But, according to Jo-Anne Otto of the Cape Winelands District Municipality, the remaining 20% of the fire is in a dry river bed and is proving hard to contain.
“The area is made up of very old and densely mixed alien vegetation which prevents teams from accessing the fire directly,” she said. “There are currently 20 ground crew members assisted by 10 fire vehicles and crew.”
“The teams will continue with active fire fighting activities throughout the day. There is currently no danger to property and no injuries were reported.”
The fire is believed to have broken out around 6pm last night, and firefighters from surrounding municipalities were deployed to bring it under control.
