On Wednesday, Cape Town was rocked by not one, but two fires which appeared to engulf the City in smoke. While the Table View fire has since been brought under control, firefighters continue to battle the blaze on the Helderberg Mountain in Somerset West.
The fire began on the slopes of the mountain just outside of the popular Lourensford Farm. Around 80 firefighters arrived on the scene, including crew members from CapeNature and Working on Fire in order to contain the flames, as per EWN.
Thankfully, there is no damage to property as the blaze continues.
The fire had spread to “high inaccessible areas” and would be waterbombed.
According to spokesperson Jermaine Carelse: “The guys will obviously work tirelessly throughout the night to contain this fire. We are envisioning there will be wind later in the week, I think Friday, and hopefully, this would’ve been extinguished by Sunday seeing that there’s rain coming to assist us.”
Unusually high temperatures, dry weather and mixed vegetation are believed to be the contributing factors to the start of the fire, as per Mail & Guardian.
