Jermaine Carelse and Renaldo Duncan completed the Two Oceans Half Marathon in just two hours and 46 minutes in full gear, beating their time of last year.

This year, the two firefighters added 10 kilogrammes, including their self-containing breathing apparatus (SCBA), to run for charity and fire safety.
‘Last year they ran the half marathon in their full firefighting gear when everyone said it’s impossible,’ says Alderman JP Smith, the City of Cape Town’s Mayco member for safety and security.
‘This year, they added their breathing tanks and beat their time of last year, coming in at two hours and 46 minutes!’

Smith says they weren’t just doing it for fun. ‘They are trying to raise funds for the Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS), to say “thank you,” for always coming out when they have had to battle the mountain fires that threatened our beautiful city.’
The 50-year-old Carelse has been a firefighter for more than 23 years. He is based in Goodwood as a Divisional Commander in the Command and Control Centre.
Duncan is 36-years-old, with 14 years of firefighting experience. He is based at Sir Lowry’s Pass Fire Station and started running in 2012 with Carelse.
This was the third time that the duo raced in their uniforms to support VWS and to raise funds and awareness.
