On Wednesday, Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service Department responded to a raging fire under Blaauwberg Road bridge, between Killarney Gardens and Milnerton rural area. The large open veld area caught fire adjacent to a housing complex, and no properties were reported to be damaged.
Roughly 70 firefighters were on the scene to contain the blaze, while the Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s Inspectors were dispatched to assist injured and displaced animals.
Property owners were urged to take their pets for veterinary treatment immediately if they showed signs of distress from possible smoke inhalation, while inspectors combed the scene as they searched for more animals that may be burned or injured.
“A beehive contained in [a] stormwater outlet survived. The bees appear unharmed. A bee expert advised not to move the hive. The bees will drench themselves in honey and move on their own accord if needed. Several Guinee fowl, who succumbed due to smoke inhalation, are among the casualties found,” The Cape of Good Hope SPCA said.
Communities came together through Facebook groups to offer assistance while others shared updates on the social media platform.
Please contact the SPCA’s Inspectorate Department on 083 326 1604 if you happen to see any displaced wildlife or animals in distress.
