A fisherman from Plettenberg Bay was bitten by a shark while attempting to release it from his fishing line at Papiesfontein, northeast of Jeffreys Bay yesterday, 5 January.

According to a statement by the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Jeffreys Bay, the man and his friend had been shoreline angling in preparation for an angling competition, when he landed a ragged tooth shark. He was bitten while attempting to free the shark from the fishing gear.

Emergency services, including the NSRI Jeffreys Bay rescue vehicle, EC Government Health EMS, Gardmed ambulance services, and Relay ambulance services, were activated. Upon reaching the scene, the victim’s friend had already applied tourniquets to the injuries, which included lacerations and puncture wounds on the man’s hand and calf.
The injured fisherman was transported to the hospital in a stable condition by a Gardmed ambulance for ongoing medical treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.
