Five men alleged to have been involved in rock throwing and subsequent looting that was targeted at a truck on the N1 appeared in the De Doorns Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The accused include Johan Brown, Thandisile Matingwa, Alfredo de Bruin, Aron de Bruin and Elrico Oliphant, aged between 28 and 46 years old.

All will make another court appearance next Wednesday. They appeared in court yesterday for a case of theft for the items stolen from a truck, which was reported to have been transporting clothing.

They are however not connected to a case of murder, despite it being the same incident where a truck driver died due to rock throwing.

This particular incident took place at approximately 5.20am last Sunday on the N1. The rock that was flung was allegedly thrown off the Stofland footbridge. The driver, whose name was revealed to be Christopher Kgomo, lost control of the vehicle and died in the subsequent crash, but his assistant survived.

The assistant is said to have taken control of the vehicle before it crashed.

As reported by IOL, Western Cape Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said that two other trucks were targeted by stone-throwers in the De Doorns area at approximately 4am on Tuesday in two separate incidents. No one was injured in these incidents.

“We are now going to try to increase the visibility of traffic officers in the area,” Africa said.
