A 55-year-old former Hawks officer has been found guilty of corruption, the possession of drugs, obstruction of justice and the loss of a firearm in a case that has been ongoing for about 12 years.

The Serious Corruption Investigation Team arrested Esmeralda Bailey in 2011 after she allegedly stole an exhibit firearm, sold a docket, stole a cellphone from a crime scene and sold a police uniform.
Zinzi Hani, spokesperson for the Hawks, told SABC News that Bailey has been out of bail since her arrest. ‘The matter has been remanded to 24 November 2023 for pre-sentencing.’ She will appear in the Bellville Serious Commercial Crimes Court.

The ex-cop is known for her investigation into the murder of baby Jordan Leigh Norton in June 2005 and the subsequent arrest of Dina Rodrigues.
According to IOL, Bailey was caught in a police trap that illegally sold police uniforms, firearms and ammunition. She allegedly received R4 500 for selling a tog bag containing a police cap, a reflector jacket, a pair of police socks, a police shirt, two pairs of pants and ammunition.
During their investigation, the Hawks found missing police dockets, court exhibits and other items at her apartment.
