A 41-year-old man was arrested on Monday while he appeared in court for an unrelated case at Cofimvaba in the Eastern Cape.
Hawks spokesperson Lt-Col Siyabulela Vukubi told TimesLIVE that his arrest is linked to the killing of Nkhola on 17 April at Philippi railway station. Nkhola was addressing residents from an informal settlement when four men fired shots at the crowd, killing him and injuring a former ANC councillor, a pregnant woman and one other person.
‘It is believed [he] was targeted for his role in talks to clear Metrorail’s central line, where families had built their homes,’ says Vukubi.
Since the incident, the Hawks have arrested 38-year-old Zukisa Tshabile, Mziyanda Mdlungu, and 39-year-old Thobani Maxengana. Maxengana passed away in a holding cell before he could make his first court appearance on 17 November.
The fourth suspect and co-accused, Mdlungu, are scheduled to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court on 1 December.
