Following instances of defying restrictions, community group Friends of Lion’s Head and Signal Hill has issued a reminder to all trail users that the infamous Wally’s Cave at Lion’s Head remains closed and requires strict adherence.
The closure, enforced by Table Mountain National Park (TMNP), will remain closed indefinitely as a result of ongoing conservation efforts on the fallen path.

‘This closure extends to all associated routes. It is imperative to adhere to this closure as outlined by law, prohibiting access to areas under rehabilitation or marked off for safety. Regardless of technical prowess, compliance is non-negotiable,’ the community group’s chairperson Kosta Papageorgiou warned.
‘Regrettably, instances have occurred where individuals, defying these restrictions, have engaged in activities endangering both themselves and others,’ said Papageorgiou.
‘Parents and guardians are particularly urged to instil a sense of responsibility in their children, emphasising the importance of respecting closures for the safety of all trail users.’
Papageorgiou also emphasised that mountain guides and SANParks rangers lack the authority to permit access in violation of established closures, even if otherwise suggested.
‘Attempting to breach these restrictions not only poses immediate risks but also places undue strain on our volunteer rescue teams,’ Papageorgiou continued. ‘These dedicated individuals, motivated solely by altruism, commit their time and resources to ensure the safety of all trail users.’

The community group’s chairperson warned that fines up to R3 500 may be imposed in events of non-compliance and subsequent rescue efforts.
Anyone who witnesses signs of illegal access is urged to report promptly to SANParks TMNP.
Papageorgioul further implored social media users to exercise discretion.
‘Individuals boasting about illegal access to Wally’s Cave may inadvertently encourage others to follow suit,’ Papageorgiou said. ‘Authorities can and will take action against those promoting unlawful behaviour.’
The group added that those who may possess images of Wally’s Cave ‘clearly communicate in the caption that access is currently prohibited due to the indefinite closure’ when sharing on social media.
‘Your cooperation is essential in maintaining the integrity of our trails and ensuring the safety of all trail enthusiasts. Thank you for your understanding and commitment to responsible trail usage,’ Papageorgiou concluded.
