More than 150 employees and community members took part in the Garden Route National Park’s annual Cancer Awareness Walk, combining a community event with a message about early detection and preventive healthcare.
Held on Thursday, 22 October, the 4.5-kilometre walk started along Wilderness Marine Drive and ended at Salinas Beach, despite unfavourable weather conditions.
The initiative was organised by South African National Parks (SANParks) as part of its ongoing focus on employee wellness and community health, with support from the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) and Old Mutual.
Beyond raising awareness, the event gave participants access to health services. Bethesda Medical and Relief Services provided a mobile clinic where attendees could receive free health tests and screening for various health conditions.
The walk also highlighted the role of regular screenings, early detection and healthy lifestyle choices in supporting overall well-being.
The annual event brought park employees and local community members together to show support for people affected by cancer and encourage greater awareness of the disease.
SANParks said it continues to promote a culture of wellness and preventive healthcare, while encouraging communities to take part in health awareness initiatives.
