A teenager surfing at Glen Beach remains missing after disappearing in the surf at Camps Bay on Saturday evening, 3 October, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The 18-year-old, reportedly from Mfuleni, Cape Town, had been swimming with friends when he got into difficulty and was swept towards Maidens Cove. One friend attempted to help, but strong currents prevented him from reaching the teenager before he disappeared.
NSRI crews from Bakoven and Table Bay were activated at 18:57 after a drowning alert was received. The City of Cape Town water rescue network was also alerted, with lifeguards, Law Enforcement, emergency medical services, Metro Police, the Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service and SAPS responding.
NSRI rescue craft Gemini Legend was launched while rescue swimmers and other emergency personnel searched the area.
A Metro Police drone unit, which was nearby, also assisted with an aerial search. Despite an extensive operation across the air, sea and shoreline, no signs of the teenager have been found. Police divers from the Water Policing and Diving Service are continuing search efforts, while police have opened an investigation.
NSRI Bakoven station commander Bevan Geyser said, ‘Despite an extensive air, sea and shoreline search no signs of the teenager have been located.’ The NSRI said its thoughts and care remain with the teenager’s family and friends during the ongoing search.
