Motorists travelling through Gordon’s Bay and Somerset West can expect roadworks over the coming weeks, as the City of Cape Town carries out repairs aimed at improving road conditions and safety, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The work began on Monday, 19 October, and is scheduled to run until Friday, 11 December 2026, weather permitting. The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate will carry out repairs between 09:00 and 16:00, Sunday to Friday, although unforeseen delays could affect the schedule.
Three roads are included in the programme: Faure Marine Drive and Gordonia Road in Gordon’s Bay, and Irene Avenue in Somerset West.
Which roads will be affected?
The repairs cover specific stretches of road, so drivers should take note of the affected areas before setting out.
- Faure Marine Drive, Gordon’s Bay: Work will take place between The Water Way and Beach Road, including resurfacing.
- Gordonia Road, Gordon’s Bay: Repairs will address damage to the road and embankment caused by previous heavy rains.
- Irene Avenue, Somerset West: Resurfacing is planned between Helderberg College Road and Harewood Avenue.
The City says the programme includes resurfacing worn sections, replacing damaged or missing kerbs and restoring road markings.
These improvements are intended to make the roads safer and more reliable for residents and other road users.
Repairs follow concerns about road conditions
The work on Faure Marine Drive and Gordonia Road follows previous concerns about the condition of the roads, according to the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
Quintas welcomed the start of repairs, saying the improvements would help maintain safer roads while keeping traffic moving across the city.
The Gordonia Road work is particularly important because it includes repairs to the road and embankment damaged during heavy rainfall.
What motorists need to know
The City says it will aim to limit disruption while construction is under way. However, motorists should be prepared for workers and temporary traffic arrangements in the affected areas.
Drivers are advised to:
- Slow down when approaching construction zones.
- Follow temporary traffic signs and instructions.
- Watch for uneven road surfaces and workers near the roadway.
- Allow extra time for journeys through the affected stretches.
- Consider alternative routes where practical.
The work is scheduled during daytime hours, which means commuters, local residents and visitors travelling through Gordon’s Bay and Somerset West may encounter construction activity during their journeys.
The City’s current programme runs through to 11 December, but the timeline remains subject to weather conditions and unforeseen delays. Motorists should therefore remain alert to temporary changes as the repairs progress.
