Tuesday was a devastating day for family, friends and the school community in the Western Cape after a Grade 11 pupil allegedly collapsed during a friendly game of touch rugby.
The high school contacted the health services immediately after the incident, which took place during the interval period, but the pupil was declared deceased upon arrival by the medical personnel, IOL reports.
The incident was reported to the Tulbagh South African Police Service, and a post mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death. The Tulbagh police have also registered an inquest docket regarding the 19-year-old male’s passing.
The Western Cape Education Department’s (WCED’s) spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond stated that the department was aware of the incident while sending heartfelt condolences those affected by this sudden and tragic loss.
She adds that the WCED has arranged for counselling services for staff and learners.
This incident comes more than a month after the loss of 25-year-old Judd Bevan, who played for False Bay RFC. According to the club, Judd was participating in practice when he collapsed, and prolonged efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
