Earlier this week, the South African Weather Service issued an Orange Level 6 warning for certain parts of the Western Cape as hail and heavy rains were expected to make landfall. Amongst the affected areas has been Oudtshoorn with around 100 people displaced due to the severe weather conditions with approximately 81 houses damaged, reports News24.
The weather warning issued by the SAWS indicated that severe damage due to heavy rains would be a high probability, and this appeared to be exactly the case as various roads around Greater Outshoorn were damaged, along with 24 trees that were ripped from the earth.
It doesn’t appear to be all bad news, rainfall was measured at 70mm, and the rain-parched town’s Raubenheimer Dam, which had been sitting at 30% over the last few months is currently overflowing.
Unfortunately, the consequences of the much-needed rain have seen many residents displaced and seeking shelter at De Jager Sports complex. While damage is still being assessed, power outages and complaints related to stormwater drains and flooded roads have been flooding in as the municipality’s Disaster Management teams attempt to attend to the situation, as per SABC News.
Thankfully, no deaths or injuries have been reported, although a shocking video of a woman being swept away and rescued while crossing a flooded low-water bridge has been doing the rounds on social media.
