The fire was soon brought under control by the firefighters.
Residents of two nearby apartment buildings were evacuated and provided temporary housing in a hotel, to prevent any harm or danger that could have befallen them from the fire.
The affected building will soon be thoroughly inspected for safety reasons before the tenants can return to their original residences, as the walls of the building can potentially collapse caused by the fire damage.
The building, formerly used as a shed when it was constructed, was located in the middle of the block between Church Street, Stockenstrom Street, Baring Street and Tulbagh Street, according to Julian Kritzinger, Breede Valley Mayco member for Local economic development (LED) and tourism.
Firefighters are still in the area to monitor the situation.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still unknown.
