A fire has gutted a number of historic homes in the Onverwacht Wine Estate in Wellington.

According to SABC, the cause of the fire is still under investigation but it has been confirmed that the fire began in one of the houses and the strong winds in the area carried it over from one thatched roof to the next, setting multiple alight.

In total three of the six homes were destroyed and no injuries or fatalities were reported.

“We are Drakenstein municipality and we also worked with the assistance of City of Cape Town, Stellenbosch Municipality, the Cape Winelands District Municipality as well as Drakenstein farm watch,” Warren Scholtz, Assistant Fire Chief and Head of Fire Safety and Disaster Management in the Drakenstein told SABC,  “The homes were spread over an area of about a hundred metres.  We had to place our vehicles at strategic points to make sure that we saved those that we could save.”
