Andiswa Hlongwane (17) learned that she went home with the wrong baby six days after being discharged from hospital.
The young mother from Umlazi south of Durban was informed by nurses at Prince Mshiyeni Hospital that her baby was mistakenly switched with another in the hospital nursery, as reported by SABC News.
She was reportedly asked to return the baby to the hospital, where staff took DNA samples to confirm the suspicions that the baby was not hers.
In a further traumatic turn of events, Hlongwane was told that a baby who died in the hospital nursery might be hers, but DNA tests must still be done in order to confirm this.
