Veteran journalist and legendary anchor, Derek Watts, has passed away on Tuesday morning after a battle against cancer.
Former Carte Blanche co-host Ruda Landman confirmed his death to News24. Watts reportedly died in hospital surrounded by those closest to him.
It was reported that a full statement will be released shortly, however, the public is requested to give the family space and time to process during this difficult time.
74-year-old Watts was diagnosed with skin cancer last year, which had already metastasized to his lungs.

According to Watts, he noticed a lump under his arm in 2022 but delayed going to the doctor. It was only after continuous insistence from his wife, Belinda, that he finally sought medical attention. By that time, the lump had grown significantly, and a sonar scan revealed spots on his lungs.
Due to its proximity to nerves, the lump could not be surgically removed and he began a treatment regimen, starting with immunotherapy, which lasted for over a year followed by intermittent use of an oxygen machine due to reduced lung capacity.
The broadcasting icon, who has been a familiar face on television for over three decades, announced in June 2023 that he would be taking a step back from Carte Blanche to focus on his health – two months after collapsing from a suspected stroke and subsequent diagnosis of severe sepsis, which complicated his cancer treatment.
At the time, the programme confirmed his cancer diagnosis and shared a taped recording of Derek in a hospital bed, thanking fans for their support, commending his team for their work on the show and sharing that he planned to return to the show when he was better.
Shortly after, Watts bid his final goodbye to an illustrious 35-year tenure at Carte Blanche, making it clear that he would not be returning to the show.
Watts has been with Carte Blanche since its inception in 1988 and has won numerous journalism awards for his work.
He was widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most respected journalists, and with over thirty years of experience, he has become an iconic household name.
Netwerk 24 reported that they had received confirmation of Watts’ death from his daughter and shared a WhatsApp message from her:
‘We are shattered, he was the most wonderful person we knew. He always thought of others and last night said he wanted to thank all his viewers. He appreciated them and loved his job.’
Various tribute messages have poured in on social media following the news of his passing.
